On phoning Howdens the gentleman (whose name unfortunately I do not have) told me exactly what the problem was and how to fix it. I did what I was told to do, to the foot pedal, and now it is working correctly again. You have saved me the expense of replacing my lovely sewing machine and I cannot Thank You enough.
